Standing Together to Challenge & Call Out Gender Bias & Inequality on International Women’s Day

On the anniversary of International Women’s Day, all of us at Black Marjieh & Sanford LLP join together to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality, and to celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world.

To mark this day, we share with you these inspiring words written by BM&S Trial Counsel Nicole P. Aldridge-Henry.

Nicole P. Aldridge-Henry

I am a multidimensional tapestry of experiences, titles and achievements that have stitched together the fabric of my existence as woman. I am a black, Jamaican woman first and foremost, and as such I stand on the shoulders of other great black heroines who have paved the path for me. Lest we forget, International Women’s Day is a perfect opportunity for us to reflect upon the different social, political, cultural, and economic experiences that we face as women that have formed the basis of our achievements.

Being a black Jamaican female attorney in the United States has simultaneously been one of my greatest joys, but yet one of my greatest obstacles. On one hand, I stand tall as a beacon of representation for all little girls who look like me, including my own daughter, on the other I am cognizant of the daunting reality that I work in a profession where black women are the singularly most significantly underrepresented group. Moreover, we are less likely to ascend through promotional ranks. However, we still forge ahead in the face of this great adversity and black women continue to shatter ceilings, carry the mantle in the fight for equality, challenge the status quo and weave our indelible achievements throughout the tapestry of the American dream, much like Vice President Kamala Harris and so many other notable sisters in success.

Black women, immigrant women and all women stand unified in our shared fights for recognition and equality and we will continue to break through every glass ceiling. Undoubtedly, women will create spaces where there are none, much like the esteemed founders of our very own Black Marjieh & Sanford LLP, a 100% women-owned law firm, and a force to be reckoned with. On this International Women’s Day I stand in power with all women worldwide against all systems of inequality and in our unified call to reclaim our respect, rights, and privileges.
